How Does an EMI Calculator Work?

An EMI (Equated Monthly Installment) is the fixed amount you repay every month towards your home loan, car loan, personal loan or education loan until the debt is fully paid off. Each EMI includes two parts — a portion that goes towards repaying the principal and a portion that covers the interest charged by the lender. In the early years of a loan, the interest component is higher; as the tenure progresses, more of your EMI goes towards the principal.

EMI Formula Used

EMI  =  P × r × (1+r)n  /  [(1+r)n − 1]

Where P is the principal loan amount, r is the monthly interest rate (annual rate ÷ 12 ÷ 100), and n is the total number of monthly installments (loan tenure in months).

Frequently Asked Questions

What is a good EMI to income ratio?
Most banks and financial planners recommend that your total EMI outgo should not exceed 40–50% of your monthly take-home income, so you have enough left for living expenses and savings.
Does a longer tenure always mean I pay more interest?
Yes. A longer tenure lowers your monthly EMI but increases the total interest paid over the life of the loan, since interest accrues for a longer period. Use the compare tool above to see the difference.
How does prepayment reduce my total interest?
A lump-sum prepayment directly reduces your outstanding principal. Since interest is calculated on the remaining principal, this reduces both the total interest payable and, depending on your lender's policy, can shorten your loan tenure.
Is this EMI calculator accurate for all banks?
This calculator uses the standard reducing-balance EMI formula used by nearly all Indian banks and NBFCs. Actual figures may vary slightly based on processing fees, GST, or if your lender uses daily/annual reducing balance variations.
